What Is the Turkey Thawing Time Planner?

The Turkey Thawing Time Planner works backward from the required cooking time using USDA refrigerator and cold-water guidance or a microwave rate taken from the appliance instructions. It shows when thawing must begin, when it should finish, required half-hour water changes and whether the turkey must move directly into cooking.

How It Works

Enter turkey weight, cooking date and time and a safe thawing method. Refrigerator mode allows approximately 24 hours per 4 to 5 pounds plus an editable refrigerated buffer; cold-water mode allows about 30 minutes per pound and schedules water changes; microwave mode requires the appliance's minutes-per-pound instruction.

When to Use It

Use it to schedule thawing, then follow current USDA and manufacturer guidance. Never thaw poultry on the counter or in hot water. Keep refrigerator temperature at 40°F or below and cook cold-water- or microwave-thawed turkey immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can A Refrigerator-Thawed Turkey Wait Before Cooking?
USDA says a turkey thawed in the refrigerator can remain refrigerated for one or two days before cooking.
Why Does Cold-Water Mode Show Thirty-Minute Cycles?
USDA guidance calls for a leak-proof package submerged in cold tap water with the water changed every 30 minutes, followed by immediate cooking.
