What Is the Chmod Calculator?

The Chmod Calculator converts owner, group and other read, write and execute permissions into octal and symbolic Unix modes. It also supports setuid, setgid and the sticky bit, includes common presets and produces a copyable chmod command.

How It Works

Choose a preset or set each permission directly, enable any required special bits and enter the target file or directory. Review the octal value, symbolic permission string and complete command before running it in a trusted terminal.

When to Use It

Use it when configuring permissions on Linux, macOS, BSD, a web server or a deployment host. Avoid broad modes such as 777 unless every local user truly requires write access.
