Lawn Seed Calculator
Plan seed weight, bag count, overage and cost from lawn area, application rate, waste and retail bag size.
What Is the Lawn Seed Calculator?
The Lawn Seed Calculator turns a measured lawn area and label application rate into a practical order. It handles both new-lawn and overseeding rates, applies a controllable overage, rounds to retail bag sizes and shows purchased versus required seed and cost.
How It Works
Measure only the plantable area, choose the pounds-per-1,000-square-feet rate printed for your seed mix, then enter bag weight, price and a small handling allowance. Use the purchased-weight result for ordering and the required-weight result for spreading.
When to Use It
Use it for new lawns, overseeding, repair zones and sports-turf planning. Seed species, germination rate, soil temperature, irrigation and calibration of the spreader all affect the field result.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is The Rate The Same For New Seed And Overseeding?
- Usually not. Seed labels commonly provide different rates, so use the application rate for your exact project and cultivar mix.
- Why Does It Round Up To Whole Bags?
- The spread rate is the calculated need, while the order must match retail package sizes. The worksheet keeps both visible so leftover seed is clear.
