What Is the Microphone Test?

The Microphone Test opens the input device you choose and shows live RMS and peak levels along with the sample rate and channel count reported by the browser. Record a short sample, play it back and download it when you need to inspect the result elsewhere. Audio remains local to the current tab.

How It Works

Select a microphone and start the test. Speak at the distance and volume you plan to use, watch the live level and peak meters, then record and play back a sample. Stop the microphone when finished; device labels appear after browser permission is granted.

When to Use It

Use it before meetings, interviews, livestreams, voice recordings or remote support sessions to check device selection, signal presence, clipping, noise and playback quality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does The Browser Ask For Permission?
A website cannot access a microphone until you explicitly grant permission. BrowserTools uses that access only inside this page and does not upload the audio.
What Do RMS And Peak Mean?
RMS approximates the signal's ongoing loudness while peak shows the highest recent level. A healthy spoken signal should move clearly without remaining pinned at the maximum.
Why Are Device Names Hidden?
Most browsers hide detailed device labels until microphone permission has been granted at least once for the page.
