Geographic Coordinate Converter
Convert latitude and longitude between decimal degrees, DMS and degrees/minutes. Validate batches, cross-check on a map and export CSV or GeoJSON.
What Is the Geographic Coordinate Converter?
A local latitude/longitude notation converter with hemisphere validation, decimal precision controls, a map cross-check and up to 1,000 batch coordinate pairs. It supports decimal degrees, degrees with decimal minutes, and degrees/minutes/seconds. It does not perform datum transformations or convert projected systems such as UTM.
How It Works
Enter latitude and longitude in their separately labeled fields, including hemisphere letters if desired. Read or copy the decimal, DDM and DMS results, or click the map to choose a point. Zoom as far as 10,000% and use Center Point to bring the coordinate to the middle; these generalized outlines do not provide street-level map details. For batches, enter one latitude, longitude pair per line without a header. Correct any row errors before exporting CSV or GeoJSON.
When to Use It
Use it to prepare coordinates for maps, field notes, spreadsheets and geographic software. Latitude is entered first in this interface, but GeoJSON uses longitude first. More decimal digits do not make the source measurement more accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What coordinate ranges are valid?
- Latitude must be between -90 and 90 degrees and longitude between -180 and 180. Minutes and seconds must each be less than 60. N/S belong to latitude and E/W to longitude.
- Can I paste a batch?
- Yes, up to 1,000 rows with one latitude, longitude pair per line, separated by a comma, tab or semicolon. Do not include a header. Rows with invalid signs, hemispheres or ranges are reported before export.
- Does this change my geographic datum?
- No. This changes notation only. Use coordinates in the same geographic reference system, conventionally WGS84 longitude/latitude for GeoJSON. Datum shifts and survey-grade conversions require dedicated geospatial software.
